On Thursday, April 25, 2024, President Yoweri Museveni officially opened Nakivubo Stadium, located in the center of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, ending a protracted wait.
As the most important citizen of the nation put the gigantic project into motion, it was a unique moment of happiness, celebration, and contemplation of the utmost dedication and hard work.
Ugandan businessman Hamis “Ham” Kiggundu restored and repaired this multipurpose stadium.
With Hon. Peter Ogwang, the state minister of sports, flanking him, President Museveni lavished admiration on the industrious young billionaire.
“I thank Mr. Hamis Kiggundu for his innovative spirit and congratulate the NRM for the smart policy of involving the private sector.” President Museveni who was donned in his trademark white long sleeved shirt remarked.
“Mr. Kiggundu’s idea of constructing this stadium was clear to me during our previous meetings, and I promised him full government support as long as it benefits our people.” the president added.
Although Kiggundu restored the stadium, President Museveni told the crowd that it belongs to Uganda and that he can only get his money back temporarily.
“Mr. Kiggundu can run it for the next 49 years to recoup his investment, but the stadium belongs to the people of Uganda. Future governments will decide its fate.” He noted.
“We shall build two more stadiums in the meantime and ensure that they meet international standards. Additionally, we will complement them with zonal stadiums in the near future. Prioritization is key; bugu bugu si muliro, akwata empola atuuka wala.
Thank you!.” He added.
2017 saw the closure of Nakivubo Stadium to make room for renovations.
Subsequently, significant modifications have been implemented, including the construction of an arena with all seats, artificial turf, netball courts, basketball courts, boxing arenas, fully equipped gyms, VIP executive boxes, and other facilities.
