Uganda narrowly edges Burundi in CHAN Qualifiers first leg

At Hamz Stadium Nakivubo Stadium on Thursday, Uganda Cranes defeated Burundi 1-0 in the opening match of the CECAFA Zone Qualifiers for the CHAN 2024. Paul Put’s team secured a first-leg advantage thanks to a crucial goal from Isaac Ogwang.

In the 35th minute, the Police FC striker beat Burundi goalkeeper Dieudonne Ntibahezwa with a low shot to give Uganda the lead. The Cranes led by a slim margin going into the first time breather, while Burundi did not pose a danger in the first quarter.

In the 49th minute, Shabani Kagayo had a chance to square the score but missed the mark. Ivan Ahimibisibwe, a striker for URA FC who took Ogwang’s spot as the goal scorer, had the finest opportunity of the second half but was unable to defeat Ntibahezwa in a one-on-one match.

Uganda triumphed in a close first leg before the rematch on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the same location. The team will use these games to get prepare for the 2024 CAF tournament, which Uganda has already secured as co-host along with Tanzania and Kenya.

Even though Burundi had a second leg, the outcome eliminated them.
